Podcast SEO: Write Show Notes for UK Search

Podcast SEO for UK show notes: use a reusable episode-page template, research search phrases, write for British queries and help Google find each episode page.

What to take away

  • Show notes do two jobsthey help a listener decide to press play, and they give a search engine text to index.
  • Give each episode page one clear subject, then repeat that subject in the title, the summary and the first line of the description.
  • Use British spelling and UK place names, because a searcher in Britain types "optimise" and "Manchester", not the American versions.
  • Publish a transcript or a detailed summary, and keep the page free of thin, duplicated text.

Start with the phrase a British listener would type

Podcast SEO helps episode pages appear in web search. Most podcast discovery still happens inside Apple Podcasts, Spotify or a recommendation from a friend. Web search is the smaller channel, but it is the one you control directly.

Pick one phrase per episode and build the page around it. An episode about VAT registration for sole traders should own that phrase, not "tax chat episode 42".

Use Google Keyword Planner to find candidate phrases, setting the location to the UK where available. Compare the suggestions with the episode's actual subject and choose one phrase that matches what a listener would search for.

If your site is already in Google Search Console, check the Search results performance report for queries bringing people to your pages. For example, an episode about VAT registration for sole traders could use the title “VAT registration for sole traders in the UK” and a summary such as “This episode discusses VAT registration for sole traders in the UK. Read the notes for the topics covered and any resources mentioned, then listen for the full conversation.” Adapt this example to the episode; it does not guarantee a ranking.

Apple Podcasts search is separate from Google web search. Apple describes its search signals as metadata, popularity and user behaviour; accurate show and episode titles and relevant category metadata help describe a listing, while engagement is not controlled by show notes alone. See Apple Podcasts ranking factors for more on discovery inside the app.

A show notes template you can reuse

Copy and fill in this structure for an interview, solo episode or panel recording:

Episode title:
[specific topic] — [listener's question or clear benefit]
First sentence:
[the main search phrase] and a direct introduction to the episode
Summary:
[two or three original sentences explaining what the episode covers]
Key points:
[three to five useful points from the episode]
Guest:
[name and relevant role, if applicable]
Resources:
[clearly labelled links mentioned in the episode]
Transcript:
[link to the transcript, if available]
Next step:
[one relevant action for the listener]

Reusable show notes template

  • Episode titlesearch phrase first
  • Summary sentencewho, what, UK context
  • Chapterstimestamp and plain label
  • Key pointsfour to six full sentences
  • Resourcesone line per link
  • Transcript or summaryfull text, trimmed
  • One call to actionsubscribe or visit

Your podcast host sends episode details to listening apps through an RSS feed. Check the feed preview for the episode title, description, publication date and audio enclosure before publishing; RSS feeds carry this information to directories.

Write British English for British queries

Spelling matters more than most hosts expect. UK readers type "optimise", "organise" and "colour", and the title they click should match. Google usually handles the variants, but the snippet still sets expectations.

Place names do more work than adjectives. An episode about hospitality in Leeds should say Leeds, not "the north". One word moves the page into a different set of results.

Choose the closest available category and subcategory in Apple Podcasts Connect. Examples of Apple Podcasts categories include Business, Education, History, News, Science and Technology; category choice can help describe the show, but it does not replace topic-focused episode notes.

Skip the stuffing. A phrase repeated in every paragraph reads as spam to a listener and adds nothing a crawler needs.

Help Google find the episode page

Give each episode a crawlable page with a unique, descriptive page title and a summary that also appears in the visible page text. Link to it from relevant pages on your site and link from it to related episodes, so listeners and search engines can follow the connections.

Include the page in your XML sitemap and use Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool to check whether Google can access it; you can request indexing, but that does not guarantee inclusion or a ranking. If your site uses structured data, Schema.org's PodcastEpisode type can describe an episode, but it is not a substitute for useful page content.

Where show notes usually go wrong

The most common fault is a description that repeats the episode title and stops.

Another is burying the guest name below the first paragraph. If listeners search for the guest, the name should appear in the opening sentence.

Leaving the description field blank in your podcast host is just as damaging. Whatever you write there is what most directories publish.

Transcripts, analytics and the data rules

A transcript naming a guest contains personal data. In the UK, the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 govern how personal data is handled, and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is the data protection regulator. Check your lawful basis for using the information and explain how you handle it in your privacy information.

Our guide to podcast transcript SEO covers what published text can do for discovery and where the limits sit.

Analytics deserve the same care. Check what your host records, keep retention short, and tell listeners what you collect before you start.

Common questions

These answers focus on web-search discovery; podcast app search works differently.

How long should show notes be?

Aim for 150 to 300 words of original text, plus a transcript if you have one. The summary should stand alone for a reader who never presses play.

Should the episode title appear again in the notes?

Yes, once in the page title and once in the summary. Repeating it through every paragraph adds nothing.

Do show notes affect rankings inside Apple Podcasts or Spotify?

Both lean mainly on your title, category and listener behaviour. Show notes matter most for web search and for directory listings that pull your description.

Do I need a separate page for each episode?

Yes. One page per episode gives each topic its own address, and it lets you link to an episode without sending readers to a homepage.
