Podcast RSS feed SEO: a practical checklist for UK shows
A practical RSS feed SEO checklist for UK podcasts: the tags that matter, host settings, Apple Podcasts Connect checks and fixes for failed episodes.
What to take away
- Your RSS feed is the ranking source. Apple, Spotify and most other apps read the same file, so one fix travels everywhere.
- Title, description and category tags carry more weight than most hosts admit, and empty tags are the most common UK feed fault.
- Apple Podcasts Connect validates feeds and rejects episodes for missing artwork, HTTP audio links or malformed dates.
- Hosting choice matters less than consistent tags and a clean enclosure URL.
How podcast RSS feed SEO actually works
Directories do not crawl your website. They poll your RSS file, a machine-readable list of episodes with titles, descriptions, artwork and audio links.
How directories find your show
- Host dashboard builds the RSS file
- RSS file lists titles, descriptions, artwork, audio
- Directories poll the RSS file
- App search matches queries against feed text
- Broken feed drops episodes silently
Search inside Apple Podcasts and Spotify is built on that file. Your show notes page can rank in Google, but the feed decides whether the show appears in an app at all.
Feed metadata is therefore the ranking input you control most directly. A tidy feed gives a directory clean text to match against a query. A broken one drops episodes without warning.
The six RSS tags that carry the most weight: title, description, itunes:category, itunes:author, enclosure and pubDate
Not every tag needs attention. Six do most of the work, and the errors in the table account for the bulk of failed submissions.
The six tags that carry weight
Tag
- title
- show name in apps
- description
- search matching text
- itunes:category
- Apple directory placement
- itunes:author
- names the publisher
- enclosure
- points at audio file
- pubDate
- orders episodes
What it does
- title
- changed every season
- description
- left as host default
- itunes:category
- one broad category only
- itunes:author
- blank on network shows
- enclosure
- HTTP link or redirect
- pubDate
- drifting timezones
Common mistake
- title
- description
- itunes:category
- itunes:author
- enclosure
- pubDate
The six RSS tags
| Tag | What it does | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| title | the show name in most apps | changed every season |
| description | long summary used for search matching | left as the host default |
| itunes:category | places the show in the Apple directory | one broad category only |
| itunes:author | names the publisher | blank on network shows |
| enclosure | points at the audio file | HTTP link or redirect chain |
| pubDate | orders episodes | drifting timezones |
A correct episode block shows how the five tags fit together:

Example UK Show

Weekly personal finance for UK listeners.

<itunes:category text="Business"><itunes:category text="Investing"/></itunes:category>

Episode 12: UK tax changes

The enclosure fails most often. A 404 on the audio file, or a redirect through a tracking domain, can stop an episode playing in one app while it works fine in another.
Category choice deserves care. Apple's podcast categories shape which browse pages a listener can find a show on. A broad "Society & Culture" tag hides a niche UK finance show from the listeners most likely to subscribe. Pick the most specific subcategory that fits, then add one secondary at most.
A numbered feed optimisation checklist
- Set a permanent show title that matches how listeners search, then leave it alone.
- Write a 150 to 250 word feed description rather than pasting homepage copy.
- Choose one primary Apple subcategory and one secondary that reflects the real content.
- Keep the owner email and website fields on your own domain, not a host subdomain. The itunes:owner email is public, so use a role address and handle any listener data under UK GDPR and ICO guidance.
- Point every enclosure at one HTTPS audio file that returns HTTP 200, with no 404 and no redirect chain in front of it.
- Use one timezone for every pubDate and the RFC 822 date format, and UTC or Europe/London are the safe choices.
- Re-validate the feed with Podcast Validator or Cast Feed Validator before and after a host migration, then re-submit it to Apple.
Transcripts are worth adding for accessibility and search, but a raw transcript can carry names, health details or client information. Once that text is stored and published, the ICO's UK GDPR guidance applies. Our podcast transcript SEO guide covers what the evidence says about transcripts and ranking.
Hosting dashboard settings that change the RSS feed
Most shows publish through a hosting platform that builds the RSS file from a dashboard. That is convenient, and it puts a layer between you and the XML, so some tags become fixed.
Check three settings in every dashboard: the custom feed domain, the category mapping, and any tracking prefix injected into enclosure URLs. The tracking prefix does the most damage, because it adds a redirect before the audio file.
A feed on your own domain, such as podcasts.yourdomain.co.uk, survives a host migration. It also keeps analytics and inbound links pointing at a name you control.
Export the raw XML once a year and keep a copy. It is the only version you can restore if a migration goes wrong.
Apple Podcasts Connect: what to set and where
Connect pulls your feed, runs checks and reports what failed. Artwork causes most rejections: Apple's podcast RSS feed requirements ask for a square JPEG or PNG between 1400 and 3000 pixels per side.
Two settings trip people up. Show Type decides whether episodes display as episodic or serial, and a wrong choice scrambles the order listeners see. Episode titles mirror the feed, so correct a typo in the source file rather than in Connect.
How Apple surfaces a show also depends on engagement signals, which is why Apple Podcasts ranking factors deserve a separate look.
Common questions
How often should I update my podcast RSS feed?
Only when something changes. Directories poll feeds on their own schedules, so you cannot force a refresh, and most pick up edits within a day.
Does the show title need a keyword in it?
A descriptive title helps. Repeated keywords read as spam and shrink click-through, so name the show clearly and put search terms in the description instead.
Do I need a separate feed for Spotify?
No. Spotify reads the same RSS feed as Apple, and a second feed splits your signals into two listings.
