Measurement
Part of Plan podcast SEO measurement before you report another download
Podcast SEO measurement mistakes that quietly distort your reports
Fix podcast SEO measurement mistakes before the next report: mixed download and web figures, promotion counted as discovery, and a rubric to score evidence quality.
What to take away
- Decide first what a report is fora board update, a client invoice or an editorial decision. The metric set follows the decision, not the other way round.
- Treat platform download figures and web analytics as separate instruments. Averaging or summing them creates a number that no source will defend.
- Record the source and the date beside every figure you keep. An unlabelled number is a liability in a commercial conversation.
- Score your reporting process with the rubric below before you change tools. Most mistakes are habits, not software faults.
- If you outsource reporting, ask for the underlying exports. The measurement and reporting guide sets out what a defensible pack contains.
Which metrics get mixed together most often?
Platform download counts, hosting analytics, search console impressions and email engagement all describe different behaviour. A download can be automatic; a search impression is not a visit; an email open is not a listen. When one slide blends them, the audience size implied is larger than any single source supports.
Metrics describe different behaviour
Download
- What it counts
- Automatic play
- Source
- Platform/hosting
- Population
- Listeners
- Blend risk
- Inflates reach
Search impression
- What it counts
- Not a visit

- Search console

Email open
- What it counts
- Not a listen

Reach and completion rate answer different questions, so a dashboard that reports only one of them will flatter the show.
Keep the columns apart and label each with its origin. For example, a show with 12,000 monthly downloads, an illustrative figure, should not sit beside 4,000 website sessions as though they were the same population.
Why does attribution break when promotion is counted as discovery?
Paid promotion, newsletter mentions and social posts all nudge listening, but they do not prove that search or a directory listing caused a new listener. Attribution methods differ by channel and by the tracking available, which the attribution methods overview explains in more detail.
Separate promoted from organic listens
Can you separate promoted from organic listens?
Report organic and promotional separately
Report promotional spend and total separately
Platform and hosting logs often disagree about the same listen, so name one as the reference series and use the other as a cross-check.
If you cannot separate a promoted listen from an organic one, report the promotional spend and the total separately. Claiming organic growth from a campaign spike is the mistake, not the campaign.
Where do privacy rules change what you can measure?
Tracking pixels in promotional email and click identifiers on listener-facing pages fall within electronic marketing rules. The ICO's Guide to PECR sets out consent and soft opt-in conditions that apply to podcast promo emails and the tracking attached to them.
Consent records need a retention period too; a list of listener emails kept without one turns into an audit finding rather than a marketing asset.
A measurement plan that ignores consent produces gaps in the data. Report those gaps honestly rather than filling them with modelled assumptions.
Which skills gaps show up in reporting teams?
Teams often have platform fluency but weak analytical writing. They can export a chart but cannot explain what changed or why. Content marketing training demand reflects this: the CIM lists social and content marketing courses covering measurement and channel planning.
A named owner for each metric stops the drift that happens when three people edit the same sheet.
Before buying another dashboard, check whether the gap is tooling or interpretation. Usually it is interpretation.
How should mobile listening be handled in reports?
Most podcast consumption happens on phones, so device context affects what a session means. IAB UK's mobile creativity FAQ covers mobile format and creative considerations that shape how ads and links behave in that environment.
App players and web players also count session boundaries differently, so note which one produced each figure.
A report that treats desktop and mobile behaviour as one line will misread completion rates and click paths.
What does a workable scoring rubric look like?
Score each report before it circulates. Two people should score independently, then compare.
Score each report before it circulates
- Source labellingevery figure has a named source
- Date currencydates on all figures plus window
- Metric separationplatform, web and email distinct
- Attribution claimpromotional and organic reported separately
- Consent handlingconsent basis recorded for tracked promo
- Decision linkeach section states the decision it informs
Workable scoring rubric
| Criterion | 0 points | 1 point | 2 points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source labelling | No source named | Source named for some figures | Every figure has a named source |
| Date currency | No dates | Dates on headline figures | Dates on all figures, plus reporting window |
| Metric separation | Downloads and web mixed | Partly separated | Platform, web and email kept distinct |
| Attribution claim | Promotion counted as organic | Mixed claims | Promotional and organic reported separately |
| Consent handling | Tracking without basis | Partial documentation | Consent basis recorded for tracked promo |
| Decision link | No stated decision | Decision implied | Each section states the decision it informs |
A total below 6 out of 12 means the pack is not ready for a client or board audience.
Common questions
Does a higher download number always mean better podcast SEO?
No. Downloads measure delivery, not discovery. A spike can come from a single promotion, an auto-download setting or a directory change, none of which indicate improved search visibility.
Can I combine hosting analytics with search console data in one chart?
Only if you label both series and explain that they measure different things. Combining them into one index figure removes the ability to check either source later.
How often should the rubric be applied?
Apply it to every report that leaves the team, and review the scores quarterly. If the same criterion scores zero twice in a row, fix the process rather than the template.
What if a stakeholder asks for a single growth percentage?
Give the percentage, name the source and the date, and state what it excludes. A single figure is acceptable when its limits travel with it.
